Please Read This Before Buying an Aroma ARC-914B Rice Cooker!
For cooking white rice or brown rice, this small Aroma 4 cup rice cooker can handle the job. We've concluded through some research that the rice is decent. Granted it is more geared for white rice when concerning its cup capacity as well as rice texture and consistency.
Having stated that, this basic compact rice cooker cooks the rice at a nice pace and will have a full 4 cup (12 cooked) bowl of rice done in around 20 to 25 minutes, and is very easy to operate since all folks need to do is press a lever.
The Aroma ARC-914B also features a cool touch design with top carrying handle allowing for easy transport and serving, and is small enough to leave on the counter without taking up much space.
It also has a nice modern design too that is available in both Silver and White, or Black and White (this refers to the small face of unit above lever). There is also a new stainless steel model.
Not so Great for Brown Rice?
For cooking brown rice some folks state that you need to add a wee bit more water per cup of rice or else it would come out undercooked. The usual measurements for brown is between 2 cups and 2 1/2 cups water per 1 cup raw depending on the grain, so the possible extra measurements some reviewers report somewhat limits your maximum capacity using this model.
It is also strongly recommended folks soak the brown rice for at least 20 to 30 minutes before starting the cooking process! This will yield a better quality batch.
Another reason for undercooked results is also because this unit is a high-temperature boiler and will not monitor how the rice is cooking but simply keep cooking until there is no more water left. The same way you would prepare rice on a stove top.
This is why we would only recommended it to folks who mainly cook white rice. Brown requires more of a learning curve, and simply put, there are better rice cooker choices for multiple rice types over the Aroma ARC-914B model! Granted they are more expensive units.
However, for similar sized/priced models check out the "Panasonic SR-G06FG" (3 cup), "Sanyo EC-503"(3 cup), or the "Cuisinart CRC-400" (4 cup) as well.
Be careful when purchasing since this cooker is sometimes mislabeled as a "steamer" by some merchants (including Amazon.com). When we checked this model on Aroma's website, it does not state it offers a steaming feature nor does it come with a steaming tray.
Conclusion
So, for folks who are looking for a well-priced rice cooker and intend on using it only once or twice a week for a quick bowl of moist fluffy white rice (or smaller serving of brown), the Aroma ARC-914B would be a fair choice. But as mentioned above, there are other models also worth considering.
This 4 cup rice cooker comes with a measuring cup, rice paddle, and manual with included recipes.
Measures: 8 /12 x 8 2/3 x 9 inches; 4 Cup Capacity (approx. 12 Cups Cooked)
