For folks who are interested in a well-built rice cooker with Fuzzy Logic technology (explained below), along with slow cooking and steaming features the Sanyo ECJ-F50S is a good model to research and compare.
However, we will state right now that the Sanyo ECJ-HC55S model does offer better steaming and slow cooking features, that being a high and low setting along with timing options for when steaming along with other minor benefits.
Having stated that, if just preparing multiple types of quality rice is your main goal, this unit will work just fine. In fact many report it being just as good as some of the more expensive Zojirushi rice cookers.
About Fuzzy Logic Cooked Rice
Fuzzy logic is a technical term used by rice cooker manufactures meaning that the unit will monitor and automatically make adjustments to cooking time and temperature depending on the type of rice you are cooking/selected on the on-board menu.
In other words, it takes most of the guess work out of cooking rice and ensures consistent moist and fluffy results every time. It even makes up for slight errors in measurements, but we stress "slight"!
The Sanyo ECJ-F50S offers the user selections of white, brown, rinse-free, mixed, and sprouted rice types along with the above mentioned slow cooking and steaming features. In addition is a 24 hour preset timer for programming a finish time along with a 12 hour keep warm function.
While we can't say this is the easiest of Sanyo rice cookers to use, it is not all that complicated either. But one does need to spend some time reading the manual to make better sense of the Sanyo's "preset timer" language as well as guessing exactly how long it will take to successfully steam vegetables.
But once you do…this Sanyo ECJ-F50S unit will perform great.
Pros
non-stick bowl for easy serving and cleaning
round extra thick bowl evenly distributes heat while cooking making quality rice of most types
prepares great tasting slow-cooked meals
retractable cord frees clutter behind cooker
cool touch handle for easy transport and serving
fits most kitchen decors and is not cumbersome on counter tops
Cons
preset timer is vague | no specific rice cycle times
Another important thing to mention to avoid both a mess and possible damage to the unit is for folks to remember to replace the inner lid after cleaning!
Unlike other units, the Sanyo ECJ-F50S uses a different latching mechanism that does not require the inner lid to be in place in order for the top latch to close. So be sure to double check that the lid is secured.
Worth it?
Overall, this is another good rice cooker in Sanyo's product line that receives a majority of good consumer feedback throughout the net, performs well, offers several features, and makes great tasting meals along with quality rice.
Since we gave this Sanyo 5 Cup rice cooker a "Very Good" rating, then we can confidently say; "yes, it is worth your purchase".
Tip: too prolong the internal battery life leave unit plugged in. The cooker will continue to work properly without the battery as it just runs the clock when unplugged. Life of battery is approx. 4 years.
Measures: 12 x 10 x 9 Inches | 5 Cup Capacity (approx. 15 Cups Cooked)
